Water Sources Filtaworx 4 × FW350 East coast, Tasmania

Overview

Sea Forest grows seaweed in tanks on Tasmania's east coast, on seawater pumped straight from the ocean. Four Filtaworx FW350 automatic filters strip out the organic and inorganic material before it reaches the tanks.

The Challenge

Sea Forest is an Australian company working to reduce livestock methane emissions. It helps farmers and industrial partners decarbonise with seaweed cultivated at its site on the east coast of Tasmania.

The seaweed grows in many tubs and tanks, all fed with seawater drawn directly from the sea, and all organic and inorganic material has to come out before it reaches them. Storms, tidal swings and shifting sand make that harder, changing both the quality of the water and how steadily it arrives.

The Solution

Four Filtaworx FW350 Automatic Self-Cleaning Screen Filters, each with a 120 micron screen.

Each filter has its own pump and its own electrical controls, and the system operates at about 400 kPa. A backwash is triggered by both elapsed time and a 50 kPa pressure differential, so the screens are cleaned on schedule and whenever a storm lifts the solids load.

Each FW350 is rated for 900 m³/h, with 12,170 cm² of filtration area and an operating pressure of up to 10 bar.
