HBIS HanDan Steelworks — Crystallizer Cooling

Industrial Water Filtaworx FW350HP Handan, Hebei, China

Overview

At HBIS Group's new HanDan steelworks, mould crystallizer cooling water had to stay clean — any interruption stops the caster. A single FW350HP high-pressure filter now protects the line at 900 m³/h.

The Challenge

HBIS Group is China's largest steelmaking group, and its HanDan subsidiary commissioned a new plant at the Jingxing site in 2022.

On a continuous casting machine, the crystallizer (mould) cooling circuit is the most critical water service in the plant. If cooling water carrying scale or solids reaches the mould, the casting line stops — and an unplanned caster stop is one of the most expensive failures a steelworks can have.

The new plant needed filtration that could hold 300 micron at 900 m³/h and 13 bar system pressure, continuously, without ever interrupting supply.

The Solution

A Filtaworx FW350HP High Pressure Automatic Self-Cleaning Screen Filter, installed on the crystallizer cooling water supply.

The filter is rated for 13 bar working pressure, with a 300 micron fine screen and electric controls backwashing on differential pressure and time. Construction is 316 stainless steel with a stainless cover lid. Backwash runs without interrupting flow, so the caster keeps its cooling water through every cleaning cycle.
