Overview
Brush filters on the caster's machine cooling water kept blocking — sand lodged in the wedge-wire screens. A twin FWT500HP with fine mesh screens took over the 1800 m³/h duty.
The Challenge
For machine cooling water on a continuous casting machine, the plant would conventionally use brush-type filters. Their weakness is sand: hard particles wedge into the wedge-wire screen, the brushes cannot dislodge them, and the filter progressively blocks.
At 1800 m³/h and 11 bar, the cooling circuit needed a filter that could remove fine sand reliably and clean itself without manual stripping.
The Solution
A Filtaworx FWT500HP High Pressure twin filter — two filter bodies sharing a single DN500 inlet and outlet — with 300 micron mesh screens and suction-scanning backwash.
Unlike a brush filter, the suction scanner pulls trapped particles directly off the mesh, so sand is discharged rather than embedded. Electric controls trigger backwash on differential pressure and time; construction is 316 stainless steel. The twin arrangement carries the full 1800 m³/h in one compact assembly.
